A delegation from the Kingdom of Bahrain visited the elderly care home affiliated with the Department of Social Services in Sharjah, to learn about the home’s experience and the services it provides to the elderly, in addition to learning about the experience of the Sharjah Age-Friendly Office affiliated with the department. The Emirates Retired Association, represented by its director, Faraj Ismail, also participated in the tour. The Emirates Society of Friends of Senior Citizens is represented by its director, Reem Salman. The Bahraini delegation was headed by Sultan Al Ali, Director of Dar Al Karama for Social Welfare, and Zahra Awad from the Riffa Cultural Charitable Society and Naima Abdul Karim Al Balushi from the Al Hikma Retired Society were members. The delegation was accompanied by Sharifa Abdullah, head of the Support Services Department at the home, where he learned about the elderly residents there, and the various services, programs, and activities they receive, including social, religious, recreational, health, and others. In turn, Aisha Hashem, Head of the Compliance and Conformity Department at the Sharjah Age Friendly Office, learned about Sharjah’s experience in joining the World Health Organization’s Age Friendly Network, of which Sharjah has been the only Arab member since 2016 until today. The network is a group of cities concerned with the elderly from various countries of the world, and Sharjah joined it after great efforts made by the emirate, which began by implementing forums on the age-friendly cities program and the possibility of its application, as it found that it has the foundations to join the network related to the care and attention of the elderly and its provision of many services. She joined in 2016 and began supporting the network’s website with her experiences and efforts. Among the conditions for membership is measuring the level of services provided to the elderly and applying the standards contained in the organization’s age-friendly cities guide, which are approximately 189 standards distributed over 8 axes: housing, transportation, community participation, social inclusion, communication, civic participation, and community and health support. . Hashem stressed the importance of the visit because it strengthens relations between Arab countries and conveys some experiences to encourage Arab countries to join the network and become its members, which we seek to achieve to increase Arab cities’ accession to the organization, which will strengthen our position and participation in the global network of age-friendly cities.
