More than 34 governmental and non-governmental entities participated in a brainstorming session organized by the age-sensitive Sharjah office of the Department of Social Services in Sharjah, in addition to the participation of inspiring and influential personalities in the Emirati society, all of whom gathered to inspire future ideas for the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Program and brainstorm ideas. Innovative and decision-making to create a comprehensive and sustainable environment for the elderly and introduce new initiatives and activities for the next phase of the program, where these departments nominated 65 of their coordinating employees to apply the standards of age-friendly cities, with the presence of a group of elderly people, and everyone was distributed at round tables to put their proposals. According to Asmaa Al-Khudairi, Director of the Age-sensitive Sharjah Office, the session was rich in topics presented by the participants, which dealt with the main axes of the eight age-sensitive cities standards: external spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, community participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, Community support and health services. The session aims to raise the level of services provided to the elderly, and to create creative, innovative and new initiatives that are in their interest and comfort. Al-Khudari added, “We met with our strategic partners from institutions, government departments, companies, and influencers in the local community, in addition to the elderly, who have a long history in volunteering, community service, and others, to develop new proposals and to develop innovative ideas to make Sharjah an age-sensitive emirate, and an ideal environment for living in luxury, and then Deciding to create a comprehensive and sustainable physical, health, social, economic and cultural environment that allows the elderly residing in it to benefit from its resources easily by introducing new initiatives and activities for the next phase of the program in accordance with the standards of age-sensitive cities. She added, the influencers also participated in the brainstorming session, given their experience in the field of elderly care and their continuous interaction with this age group, about the challenges they face and ways to improve their daily lives by thinking of innovative and effective solutions to these challenges. And Dr. Al-Anoud Al-Marzouqi, Assistant Professor from the University of Sharjah, who moderated the session and carried out various activities during the session using various tools and methods used to generate ideas. Among the suggestions submitted by the participants: age-sensitive buildings that are sustainable housing in which there is air, sun and lighting, and a smart alarm that connects the smart home to the hospital or ambulance, the participation of the elderly residents of the region by choosing the form of planning for the region. The proposals also included encouraging the elderly to practice their hobbies and manual skills, spreading awareness and education directed towards different groups, and compulsory community work hours, including caring for the elderly as a requirement for graduation from one stage to another. Names were chosen for the proposed initiatives, including “Barakat Al-Bayt”, which is a new initiative in the security culture program for the elderly, and “Kashtna Ghair”, which is about quarterly trips organized from the suburbs to museums, “Is Your Crescent” dialogue and awareness sessions, competitions and activities organized during Ramadan And the “May God bless you” initiative for the participation of the elderly in national and social activities, and the “wise experts” which are organized visits for retired employees to the same facility in which he previously worked to present his experience, as well as the “I am still strong” initiative to provide qualified and equipped sports halls in the suburbs. It includes physical therapy, psychological, cupping, etc.
