As part of its celebrations of the International Elderly Day, which the world celebrates on the first of October of each year, the Department of Social Services in Sharjah organized a program full of recreational trips for senior beneficiaries and registered citizens at the department level, with the aim of spreading happiness in them. About 184 senior citizens from the affiliates benefited from all branches of the department, in addition to 47 escorts. The trips included Al Hanawi Farm, the Rain Room in Sharjah, Masafi Countryside Lounge, Cloud Lounge, Al Reem Lounge, Al Dhaid Safari, Hatta Orchard Rest, Al Bustan Center for Wildlife Breeding, Mleiha Garden Majlis, Al Madam Farm, Celebrity Farm in Al Bidiyah, and Al Baha Reef Lounge in Masafi and the family farm in Zubair. Abdul Rahman Al Darmaki, director of the Kalba branch, head of the committee for internal and external trips for senior citizens, said that the department pays a lot of attention to senior citizens for their happiness and integration into society, allowing them to feel comfortable and psychologically and socially calm. Al Darmaki added that the global trend is to raise the age of old age due to the improvement in the level of health, hospitalization and care, and the availability of medicines that delay chronic diseases. Studies have shown that the elderly can contribute to economic development, as well as benefit from the experiences they gained in their past and pass them on to other generations. From this standpoint, the department is working to develop services and programs related to senior citizens and make them sustainable. Among the most prominent initiatives launched by the department, which had a great positive impact on the elderly, is the Sharjah Office for the Elderly, and elderly-friendly institutions, among others. An opportunity to meet with their counterparts, especially after the isolation period due to the Covid 19 pandemic, which prevented them from direct contact and compensated for it by default.
