A few days ago, the educational classes for senior citizens were opened in the Department of Social Services in the Hamriyah Branch, and 22 women from the department were received in two semesters, as part of the “Science is Light” initiative launched by the Sharjah Education Council, 5 years ago, in implementation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, with the aim of eliminating illiteracy in the emirate among senior citizens. The initiative is based on teaching them mathematics, Arabic, social studies and Quran memorization. The female students whose ages start from 60 years and above, and the oldest of them, who is 79 years old, are regularly enrolled in their studies, but excel and are active, and are also memorizers of the Noble Qur’an. Mariam Al Shamsi, director of the Hamriya branch in the department, says, five years ago, we participated in the implementation of the "Science is Light" initiative launched by the Sharjah Education Council, with the aim of providing education for senior citizens, and female students in literacy classes are all members of the "Al-Asala Club" of the department, and joined the classes. From the beginning of the initiative, but during the Corona pandemic, they preferred to stay at home, so we provided distance learning opportunities. At first, we were afraid that they would accept study via electronic boards, but they proved to us the opposite and continued studying from home. After that, the study became available electronically and in attendance, so the students were divided between the virtual and the existential, with the same passion and desire to study, and this new academic season we decided to open two semesters to attract them all, while allowing those who wish to study remotely as well, and noting that registration is still ongoing. She continued, saying, We provided the two classes in the Hamriyah Suburb Council, and transportation was provided by the Education Council in Sharjah, as well as teachers, electronic boards, books and other required items. Classes start at nine in the morning until 12:XNUMX in the afternoon. We aim to provide educational opportunities for senior citizens and give them the opportunity to complete their studies, which have been interrupted for many reasons. It may be marriage, childbearing, and responsibilities that hindered the achievement of their desire to study. Today, we provide them in cooperation with the Sharjah Education Council, with the aim of achieving educational sustainability in continuing education in order to achieve raising services. educational and educational. Al Shamsi said that "The Curriculum of Knowledge is Noor" was developed specifically for the target group at three different levels, and was authored by a group of academics and educators with experience in preparing the curricula that were approved by the University of Sharjah.
