The study has started in the classes of the "Knowledge is Light" initiative of the Social Services Department in Sharjah, for women aged 21-85 years old who are enrolled in the three academic classes. It is worth noting that there are many applications on the waiting list. Maryam Al Qasir, Director of the Social Education Department, announced that this academic year 2024-2025 will witness the graduation of the first batch of female students who joined the initiative and passed the three classes. She also mentioned that the new thing for this academic season is the addition of a fourth class to the other classes of the initiative, which is a free, non-systematic educational program that aims to eradicate illiteracy among the elderly for uneducated women, who receive education in four basic subjects: Arabic language, mathematics, social studies, the Quran and Quranic and Sunnah Sciences. Al-Qasir said that the Social Services Department takes on all financial responsibilities, including school supplies, stationery, tablets and transportation. In addition, the initiative was launched in all areas of Sharjah in the Central and Eastern Regions in addition to Sharjah. The Eastern Region is witnessing the highest turnout of female students, aged 50-60 years. The Department has provided classroom spaces, where studies are held in Sharjah at the headquarters of the Women's Union Association, in Kalba at the University of Sharjah and the branch headquarters at the Services Department, and in Khorfakkan at Khorfakkan University. There are also female students in the Eastern Region at the Department's branch in Dibba Al-Hisn, all of whom are in the branches of the Social Services Department in the Central Region. Al-Qasir explained that the curricula offered were prepared specifically for the "Knowledge is Light" initiative, and were developed by a team of professors from the University of Sharjah. Currently, the curricula are being updated and all subjects are being audited by the Knowledge Department in the Department. As for the study days, they are from Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 12 pm, and the study includes activities, events and workshops. The teaching staff consists of literacy specialists, and this year an assistant supervisor specialist was added. It is worth noting that the initiative came in implementation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, with the aim of eliminating illiteracy in the emirate among the category of senior citizens.
