The Sharjah Age-Friendly Programme, in the Sharjah Department of Social Services, launched a guide for participation in the Age-Friendly Institutions Initiative in its fifth session, to pave the way for governmental, private, and semi-governmental institutions to participate in the initiative, by creating programs and services that help the elderly and make it easier for them. Their lives and daily lives and contributes to their integration into society through the eight standards set by the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities, of which Sharjah has been a member since 2017. This is during the period from May 14 until the end of June, and submission is via the website: https://agefriendly. shj.ae. The announcement of the results is preceded by evaluation visits to the participants, and the results are announced on International Day of the Elderly on the first of October of each year. Asma Al-Khudari, Director of the “Sharjah Age-Friendly Program”, stated that the number of age-friendly institutions since the launch of the initiative in 2020 has reached 39 institutions in Sharjah and the eastern and central regions, while the approved institutions are re-evaluated every 3 years. These institutions are the entities that have met 80% of the approved standards, which focus on the engineering environment, services, facilities, and social empowerment of the entity, so that it is sensitive to elderly customers. Our mission is to motivate all institutions to adapt and develop their facilities and services to be appropriate to the needs of the elderly. Al-Khudari pointed out that there are conditions and standards for institutions to be accredited and age-sensitive, in accordance with engineering requirements and standards for accessible and distinguished services, which will also affect other groups in society, such as people with disabilities. Thus, these institutions ensure societal integration and encourage active aging by improving opportunities for inclusion and achieving participation. The general provisions for participation in the initiative are to fulfill 80% of the criteria that apply to the participating entity and to fulfill the basic criteria for evaluation. If it is not available, participation is cancelled, and the Evaluation Committee conducts evaluation visits to the institution to see the institutions in reality. The entity has the right to participate again in the initiative in the event of changing the building or wanting to participate in a new branch. The entity also has the right to benefit from the honor photos and the initiative’s logo for marketing. The initiative relies on three strategic foundations: sustainability, by offering programs and activities characterized by continuity. Equality: that work with the elderly is carried out on the principle of equality and justice. Finally, advocacy: that work be done on the basis of supporting and adopting the idea that Sharjah is an age-friendly city. Staff The Sharjah Age-Friendly Cities Program aims to create a comprehensive and sustainable physical, health, social, economic and urban environment that allows the elderly residing there to benefit from its resources easily and conveniently to achieve effective healthy ageing. This initiative will allow the identification of age-friendly institutions and facilities that will carry the title of “age-friendly institution.” Staff The initiative aims to enhance the membership of the Emirate of Sharjah in the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities affiliated with the World Health Organization. The strategic plan of Sharjah is an age-friendly city program and supports the creation of a harmonious environment that meets the needs of the elderly in the emirate. And raising the readiness of the engineering and service environment of the institutions participating in the initiative in line with the needs of the elderly. It also raises awareness among the community about the best practices and programs provided to the elderly in the emirate, and highlights the role of participating entities in initiating their age-sensitive services.
