One of the events that the patrons of the elderly care home affiliated with the Department of Social Services in Sharjah awaits annually, in the holy month of Ramadan, is the “Khattar Al-Dar” volunteer initiative, which enhances the aspects of community integration as it brings together the elderly with friends and family from different sectors of society and its institutions at the breakfast table, as well as performing prayers. Especially Tarawih prayers in the house’s mosque located in the outer courtyard of the house, which was built by order of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, so that the elderly do not have to go to the trouble of moving outside the house to pray, especially since most of them use wheelchairs for transportation. “Khattar Al-Dar” is an Emirati popular expression that means visitors or guests of the home, which the department launched in 2016 as a public volunteer opportunity open to everyone and all age groups, and comes within the framework of enhancing community cohesion and providing happiness and joy to the elderly residents of the home, who gather at a table. One with the guests It is also an opportunity to socialize in the holy month. Maryam Al-Qatari, Director of the Elderly Nursing Home, said that registration in the “Khattar Al-Dar” community initiative began before the advent of the holy month, as many parties registered on the platform, and thus the guests will participate from the first day and continue until the end, noting that the usual program of visits to the home is Also ongoing. She stressed that there are no conditions for the visit, but those wishing to participate in Khattar Home must register for the volunteer opportunity on the platform of the Sharjah Voluntary Work Center of the Department of Social Services, from community members to participate with parents in the group breakfast that is organized daily at the home’s headquarters, in addition to entities and individuals wishing to join. The department's branches and departments also participate in breakfast with senior citizens according to an organizational program for participation. She mentioned that breakfast is provided by the house to its guests, and there is no objection if they in turn want to bring gifts and breakfast, as what matters to us is that our elders spend beautiful and entertaining times that put a smile on their faces and bring comfort to their souls, and that they share with others. The program contains various programs, including a poetry session, a section for health and preventive awareness, in addition to presenting interactive cultural and heritage questions. The initiative also includes offering skills for learning professions, and a “Salaf” session deals with customs and traditions inherited from the forefathers and ancient vocabulary, and reading short stories about the past. Among the programs offered to the elderly, Al-Qatari said, there are many programs and events organized during the holy month of Ramadan, in addition to the house’s khuttar, which are religious programmes. An agreement was made with the Department of Islamic Affairs in Sharjah to provide lectures to the residents of the home, and the residents also distribute breakfast meals to passersby during Breakfast time is special for the workers, with the support of Sharjah Policemen. Zayed Day is commemorated on the 26th of Ramadan, which is the anniversary of the death of the late humanitarian Sheikh Zayed, may God have mercy on him, by preparing the house with Qur’ans and supplications to commemorate this memory that is dear to their hearts. Leaflets and prayer books are also distributed to worshipers at Al Dar Mosque.
